Ever wanted to be an Astronomer? How about a Navigator? This is your first introduction to both. Over the next month, you will be making observations of the sky overhead. Make sure you pay close attention. True scientists keep track of all details!

Major Geographic Features

In this lesson, students review some basic geography and work on their map reading skills. By analyzing different maps, they will create their own set of maps to identify the 7 continents as well as some of the major geographic features on, or surrounding, them.

How Fast Could a Volvo 70 Go?

image

During the Volvo Ocean Race, the crews all sail a boat called the Volvo Open 70. Though each boat may have built differently, they all meet the same set of specifications. By the end of the 2004-2005 Volvo Ocean Race, the 24-hour speed record had been broken multiple times by these Open 70s. Think it could be broken again? At a record-setting pace, how long do you think the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race would take?

Tides, Tide Cycles, and the Moon

What are tides? What causes them? In this lesson, students explore the concept of ocean tides. They will learn what they are, what causes them, the differences in water level, and the relationship of the tidal cycle to geography and the lunar cycle.

Today's Race Fact

Brought to you by Sail Newport.

fact"The leaders on the second leg to Cochin are homing in on the scoring gate. The Dragon is silenced but not slain and the cat licks its wounds."

Volvo Ocean Race News has reported that Puma has cracked the lateral frame of the hull, and Green Dragon has broken her boom. However, the race goes on as the boats fight through the Roaring 40s.

Students, if you would like to send good luck to the crew of Puma, you can email Brad Read at Sail Newport, and he will forward your messages on to the crew.

Learning at the Extreme!

Welcome to the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race education Website sponsored by Sail Newport and St. Michael's Country Day School. Through this Website, middle school students and teachers will virtually race around the world with seven Volvo Ocean Race teams as they circumnavigate the globe.

For 37,000 miles, we will be tracking these teams while learning Geography, Marine Science, Math, History, Physical Science, and much more. This site will be updated regularly throughout the 08-09 school year, so be sure to check back often.
